CSF Pro-Am Fam Surf Contest Lights Up Oceanside Pier

PRESS RELEASE

Under sunny December skies with light winds the Christian Surfing Federation set up shop this past weekend on the South side of the Oceanside Pier.

Billed a "Family Fest" it did not disappoint as there were surf divisions for all levels and age surfer- from top pros to mini-groms.

On the beach between heats kids, along with the help of some dads, tarps and suds, constructed an epic boogie board slip 'n slide- designed for launching huge airs. Happy to report no injuries, a bunch of wacky rides and lots o laughs were had by all. After the slip 'n slide groms were seen playing dodgeball and riding those impossibly fun but massive Hamboard skateboards throughout the pier zone- not at the same time, of course.

Nate Wells, youth Pastor at Las Flores Church in Carlsbad delivered a Christmas message, while Steve Harmon of Grace Chapel played beautiful worship music that filled the coastal area with warmth.

The action in the water-

The guys in the Pro Division put on a clinic on ripping chest high surf, helping inspire the other competitors to see what was possible.

In the Pro Final was Paul Pugliesi, Ausin Ware, J.D. Lewis and Christian Saenz.

It was a tight affair throughout the 20 minute heat- as each pro had managed two mid level scores. However with time getting tight and needing a score J.D. Lewis found a solid left hander allowing him to unleash a series of vertical jams that earned him a 9 point ride and a slim victory over second place finisher Austin Ware. Taking Third was Christian Saenz and fourth Paul Pugliesi.

Military children learn the ropes of Surfing

This past weekend at Camp Pendleton Beach, near San Onofre, Laguna surfers from all walks of life pitched in to teach military kids and their parents a thing or two about the joys of riding waves.

Laguna was well represented with lifeguards, doctors, architects, artists and surf rats — just to name a few who signed up to help out with this worthy surf adventure.

MJ and Me at the Roller Rink

I was honestly crushed by the sad news of MJ's passing.

His music played an important role in my awkward, yet strangely exciting Jr high school years.

I remember the rush of adrenaline pulsing through my veins when the lights dimmed at the roller rink. The voice over the microphone rang out saying "guys grab a girl 'cuz it's time for couples skate!" I was a bit nervous about asking out the reigning school starlet, but when the DJ cranked up Billie Jean it was at that moment that I realized my entire life (13 1/2 years) was simply dress rehearsal for what was next...

As I shoved my skinny arms hurriedly into my black Members Only jacket I could feel the rinks powerful overhead fans (designed to mask the odors of 200 sweaty teens) whipping my hair into a perfectly feathered frenzy.

It was showtime.....

As the music blared I could feel the rhythm and beat of Billie Jean magically sync into my very being... Without further delay I grabbed that young starlet by the hand and whisked her gracefully onto the center of the rink, where only the beautiful kids dare skate...

Even as the security staff led me forcibly out of the rink and through the starlets surprisingly loud and rather pointed rebuke, I could still hear MJ in the background singing his heart out; "Billie Jean is not my lover, she's just a girl that says that I am the one, but the kid is not my son."
Not sure what those lyrics meant, but they sure felt good to sing back then and even now.

God bless you MJ, love and thanks for being a great wingman to gen x. We hope your dancing with the angels.

We (Soul Surfing) were honored when approached by the event director to work with the event VIP's-

These VIP's happen to be homeless kids from the Oceanside area and boy do they know how to let loose and have a good time. The love and laughs were flowing freely and we were truly stoked to spend a few hours surfing together with these "groms"...

Many thanks to the fine folks at Stand Up For Kids who have an outreach that helps these young folks get on their feet..

Hey! This is the first of many more Grom surf shots to come. In this blog you can read about a rad guy(Chris Williams), and his family and their awesome ministry Soul Surfing School. The school is headed up by Chris and his wife Karen. Together they created an outreach here in beautiful Laguna Beach, Ca. Their mission is to teach surfing and also use it as a tool to spread God's word to the young, old, and everyone in-between. If you are a beginner in surfing or even seasoned shredder their camps offer professional instruction for all types of surfing and skill levels. On top of that you can walk away with a changed and amazing perspective on life!

They also offer Skate camps taught by pro-am skaters who are experienced with youth and professional instructing. These camps offer the same results as the surf camps. Your child or yourself can walk away with new skills and a better outlook on life.
